Western Digital WD TV Live Review

[ad_1]

Okay! Here goes my first gadget review. I am going to tell about a very cool bit of technology innovation called Western Digital WD TV Live player. A small cute device that is going to change the way you viewed connected media before!

Honestly speaking I didn’t appreciate this amazing piece of work when my husband bought it. Well he is a gadget freak or more rightly an electronics-shopaholic. But just like any shopaholics he has his own way of convincing why that was a ‘can’t live without’ stuff. I was really skeptical if any of his reasoning was going to even convince me on this. But this time, it was the product that convinced me! I’d not say that it’s a gadget you can’t live without, but I’d definitely say its worth every penny for its versatility.

Features:

Full-HD 1080p video playback.

Plays almost all types of media

Audio – MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF, MKA

Photo – JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, BMP, PNG

Video – MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4, Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H.264),MTS, TP, TS

Playlist PLS, M3U, WPL Subtitle -SRT (UTF-8), SMI, SUB, ASS, SSA

Doesn’t require a Western Digital networked device to be able to play the media in it.

Live streaming from YouTube, Flickr, Pandora, and Live365. What’s more here?? You can login to your personal accounts in these internet media sites and play just your favorites! (Unfortunately Netflix and Picasa are missing.)

Comes with a good remote control.

Hitches:

Yeah it does have few hitches.

1. Though the network setup is really simple (just have to plug-in the cable from router), a small mistake in setting up file sharing in connected PCs can take ages to resolve. I personally had this problem (I had one Win7 laptop and one Win XP laptop – WD in fact offered to take the device back as they couldn’t say why I couldn’t connect to the networked laptops. Thankfully I had sense enough to Google for the solution and we were able to do the network media sharing!)

2. No inbuilt wireless connectivity. But this can be excused as streaming media over the network is better when its wired rather than wireless. (We did try the Wireless-N adapter, but it works pretty good as our router is also 802.11 draft2 N class – but definitely not as good as having it hard connected). So what’s the hitch? The extra bucks that you’ll have to throw in for the wireless adapter (and a N router).

Final Word:

This all in one wonder box is sure enough worth the money and will have you hooked on to it. Its a real piece of entertainment – Go for it! Its time for you to experience the good things that come in this small package.

The Power of Publicity – Finding Your Media Niche

[ad_1]

Whether you are the owner, manager, or public relations director of a company, chances are, you’re always looking for ways to get your name in the public eye. While advertising is a great start, enhancing your advertising with publicity creates a perfect marriage of exposure for your company. What is publicity? It’s non-paid communication to promote your company in a positive light using media vehicles like television, radio, magazines, and newspapers. Through publicity you build mutually beneficial relationships between your business and the public on whom your success or failure depends.

When it comes to publicity, most people believe they can write a press release, send it to a TV station, radio station or newspaper and just wait for the avalanche of phone calls. But time goes by… and after they realize there aren’t any reporters beating down their door, they make a few phone calls to the newsroom only to discover that no one even read the press release. All of that time and work goes down the drain. You’re back to square one and you start over, but to no avail. So how do you end the vicious cycle of disappointment?

Research can make or break your pitch

Research. Plain and simple, you need to know your audience and know your media market. And research is the key to both.. So first and foremost you need to take a look at your message and ask yourself a few questions–is it newsworthy? Is it consumer-related? Does it have a local twist? Is it a visual story? What demographic am I targeting–how old is my audience and what is their target household income? The answers to these questions will help you craft your ‘pitch’ and determine which media outlets you should target.

While most people go for the saturation effect, seeking radio, television and print media simultaneously, the reality is that your message might not be a good fit for all media. So that brings us back to the research table. Now it’s time to do a little homework and figure out where your message stands the best chance of garnering media attention.

How do I get on TV?

TV newscasts communicate to their audience through pictures and conversation. Producers look for newsworthy topics that are visual and entertaining or informative ‘how-to’ segments. They want compelling conversation and pictures that will grab the viewers’ attention. They don’t want a ‘talking head’ rattling off statistics or blatantly plugging a new book.

Worried that your message isn’t visual? Try this- ask yourself how you’d explain your message to a child? Did that help you think of any pictures or simple words that fit your message? Those pictures or simple words can translate into graphics for a TV story. We once had a life insurance agency that wanted us to arrange local and national TV appearances for their CEO. The pitch we created offered interviews discussing the importance of life insurance and why it’s vital for women to protect themselves for the future. Sounds like you could sleep right through it, right? But we offered more than just the interview. We had the client prepare graphs and bullet points with short information snippets showing the mortality rate of women versus men. The TV stations turned them into graphics and voila– it became a very powerful visual story that was successful for our client and the media.

Keep in mind too, that the morning, noon and evening newscasts are each geared towards a different audience. The early morning shows are usually watched by working adults and families getting ready for school. Notice how the news formats shift into more of a talk and lifestyle segment that’s sprinkled with news ‘updates’ after 8AM when most commuters have already left for work?

Saying Your Piece on Talk Radio

Radio talk shows engage their audience through words rather than photographs. Most radio stations are turning to local angles for interviews. So it’s important to figure out if your message has a local tie-in or is important to your community.

Because radio doesn’t require visual props or photos, it’s a great fit for just about any message, so long as you can discuss your topic for a good 30 minutes. Because what you’re really doing is having a conversation with the listeners, you need to be well-versed in your topic and able to handle plenty of questions. Your message should be topical too; something people want to talk about at the office water cooler or over coffee.

Radio talk shows, which are found mostly on the AM dial, also vary from morning to night. Morning shows have shorter interviews during this “drive time” to work. Talk show hosts don’t have time for a 30 minute interview because morning shows are jam-packed with news, weather and traffic updates.

Midday shows were once known to target women, but that’s changed because so many people listen to the radio at work. Now, you’ll find many business shows air during typical daytime work hours. After work, you’ll find the second “drive time” of the day. Unlike in the morning, listeners are more relaxed. They’re on the way home from a long day at work and there’s more time to air a 30 minute interview.

During the evening, it’s a mixed audience of people listening from home. And don’t discount the reach of overnight interviews–while you may think no one is listening, think again! Overnight talk shows (from midnight to 5 a.m.) are very important due to overnight jobs that bring in listeners – 2nd and 3rd shift factory workers, public service employees and many other industries that operate all night long.

Getting Yourself in Print

Print publicity includes magazines and newspapers. While they are two different vehicles, their requirements are similar to television. Your pitch needs to be newsworthy, entertaining, informative, and in some cases, even visual. Newspapers work on tight deadlines, so make sure you don’t wait a week after a hot story is released to offer your expertise or an interview on the topic. Magazines, on the other hand, often have a 30 to 60 day lead time. Research the publication you want to contact and make sure they have a reporter who covers your topic or message. It’s also helpful to offer quality visuals. For example, restaurants offering a recipe, a gym offering tips to a tighter tummy, even the latest trends in jewelry, can all be accompanied by photographs to support the story.

I’ve Narrowed the Search, Now What?

Once you know the types of media you want to target, how do you know which TV stations, radio stations, or print publications are in your area? You can always subscribe to some sort of media list, but why would you do this when the internet is full of free media information? Some websites you may find helpful are www.radiolocator.com, www.usnpl.com, www.newspapers24.com , www.mondotimes.com and www.newslink.org. You can also use a basic search engine and search for your city + media, for example type in “Tampa Media.” You’ll find a whole list of media outlets at your fingertips.

Now that you’ve found a list of media contacts, you’re well on your way to creating a Power Publicity campaign to drive business to your company. Now that you understand why it’s so important to find your media niche, next up in our series, we’ll focus on creating a powerful message. To be successful at publicity, you must create your message specifically for your target audience and then find the best media vehicle to drive your message home. That’s why pushing those standard press releases didn’t work for you in the first place.

Digital Television – Innovative Medium of Communication

[ad_1]

One of the most advanced technologies is Digital Television. Alike computers, digital TV transforms videos and films into digital form before they get transmitted. The betterment in the technology of television resulted to the adoption of DTV. This type of television comes with lots of advantages.

All over the world people are using Digital televisions. The image quality is one of the features which bring popularity to this device. Length, width and height of pictures appear with perfect balance. One would not find the image problem called Ghosting. Actually, Ghosting is the problem which exist as blurred image, seems unclear to eye. Along with ghosting., users are not needed to worry about other technical problems which include weak sound, sound pitch fluctuations etc.,

This TV is perfect for watching movies. The quality sound and image will not allow one to move before the movie gets finished. The reason for good sound and image is such signals which work on low bandwidth. TV doesn’t feel the requirement of broadcast spectrum in low bandwidth. Coming of this communication tool has decreased the popularity level of Analog televisions. Few channels required some programming with the introduction of DTV.

There is one important difference between Analog and Digital Televisions. The former use magnetic waves for the process of transmitting audio and video signals. The later type employ data like computers does in order to offer superior quality of audio and videos. Another advantage of DTV is their wide screen. It is well known that resolution of TV plays a vital role to illustrate better picture quality. More the pixels more better would be the picture quality. In case of Analog televisions, one would find the resolution of 512 x 400 pixels. Simple computer appears with 640 x 480 resolution. But DTV provides minimum ten time better image quality as compared to Analog TV. Viewing TV would be pleasant experience with them.

Digital technology is very advanced in nature. With wide screen format, one can enjoy watching videos with DTV. The wide screen ratio of 16:9 contributes to offer fabulous picture formats, integrated powerful internal terminals and many other. With the same technology, an individual can watch several programs at the same time. On a single channel, it is quite easy to broadcast numerous high definition programs. Several brands are available in the market providing efficient DTV to users.

Digital TV appears with user friendly interface. It is not a problem to go through the channels listing. With it, one is not required to search the channels as per need and desire. Several TV manufacturers are present. But, it is quite obvious that looks, specs, feature, deal and offer vary from company to company. Users would be happy to know that they can take the help of online TV shops for complete knowledge and details of latest arrivals regarding DTV’s. Online shops are very effective as one can remain safe with one’s hard-earned money and precious time which can be spend on other important work. Doubtless, television viewing experience has been improved a lot with the advent of DTV’s. Hence, own latest Digital Television of any leading brand and enjoy leisure time at home a lot.

How Super Are Super PAC's? Are They Being Controlled By The TV Media?

[ad_1]

The race is on – and it’s not four-legged critters such as in the usual horse races. Instead a much more important and costly race is on for the highest office in our land. Who will win – we all are anxious to know. We all hope it will be “our candidate.” Many of those in influential circles such as the elite  TV   media  believe they already know the answer. But do they? How will the deluge of Super PAC ads affect the outcome? Just how super are… super PAC’s?

These Super PAC’s of course are the private groups who organize and raise money in order to elect political candidates or to advance the outcome of, in this case, the 2012 Presidential race.

In past years I’ve always been a somewhat occasional observer of the political scene. Once in awhile while driving I’d catch a few minutes of one of the more popular daily talk-show hosts on the radio. And that would “catch me up” on the issues. Or, so I thought. But the issues are now changing so rapidly, I’m finding it takes more than an occasional hearing. And I have found myself not only glued to the radio but also to the internet to learn and research for myself what is happening to our great country.

And what I’m hearing and seeing is that the all-new-this-year-right-out-of-the-box Super PAC ads are daily being blasted across the airwaves. Their messages being not always made up of truth. Yet millions of dollars are being invested in them by everyone from the lowliest peon to the highest ranking CEO of the largest corporations, banks and investment firms. A lot is hanging on these major players called Super PAC’s. But is all this money bringing in the results that is hoped for.

Well, up until a few days ago I thought it was an open playing field – with of course those with the most backing being more effective simply because of the volume power. But now I’m beginning to wonder if there is not other things happening. For instance”When Mitt Romney Came to Town” came out it hit the news and several main media sources were talking about how terrible and false it all was. Even the candidate that PAC was supporting suggested that if they could not substantiate their message they needed to pull it. The fact being, it definitely got media coverage.

I had seen the production and also most, I think, of the media’s critique of it. And I thought, okay, we’ll see what happens. So in a day or so I checked out the sources’ site and there was an open letter to the “enemy” candidate stating their verification of the facts and offering to pull the ad – when they received verification of certain facts from the “enemy camp.” Interestingly, I heard nothing more on the subject.

Then this same site came out with a shocking production relating the other candidate to a Medicare scandal – which I would think would grab the attention of nearly everyone in America. But, amazingly, that was not the case. You didn’t hear anything about it on the news. Then this Super PAC’s full “documentary” on the subject came out. You would surely think that would be the subject of debates and be on the lips of everyone. Especially since right on the same website they provided a bold link to the documentation for what is presented. But not so. I have watched and listened carefully and have heard nothing.

So, how super are the Super PAC’s? I’m wondering if they are only as powerful as the  TV   media  allows them to be. But then when I think about it, I must ask myself where exactly does all such power come from? It ultimately comes from God. All the money and all the talent invested in Super PAC’s ultimately are in the hand of God to do with as He wills. The mighty King Nebuchadnezzar found that to be true; and after a season of great humiliation, proclaimed: “And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth and none can stay his hand or say unto him, What doest thou? (Daniel 4:35).

Yet it doesn’t end there. We have been given access to this Great Power through prayer. And as the saying goes, prayer changes things. Because our Great God hears our prayers. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availed much” (James 5:16-17). So if Elias, a man who was no different that we are could pray and affect whether or not it rained for 44 months – perhaps our prayers can effect greatly whether or not the truth gets out. Which ultimately, it could effect the impact of even Super PAC ads – with or without the control of the media.

Watching TV Shows Online – P2PTV vs Streaming

[ad_1]

If you want to watch TV shows online there is more than one way to do it. Peer to Peer TV (P2PTV) and streaming media remain the two most popular choices. This article will talk, in simple terms, about the advantages and disadvantages of the two protocols.

1. Peer to Peer TV, better known as P2PTV.

This is the newest kid on the block and a lot people are taking notice of P2PTV. How can you not notice it, when the makers of Skype have taken this on as their next project? Joostt is just one of the players in and increasingly competitive field. P2PTV works on the same principles as BitTorrent. The big difference is that P2PTV does not take packets of data in a random order. Instead P2PTV picks up all of the parts in sequence. What this means, for the viewer, is that you are able to watch the show as you download. You then share the information along to the next person or people watching the program, seeding as you would for a normal torrent.

Advantages:

– You can watch high quality shows using P2PTV, just the same as you can with BitTorrent.

– There are legal networks available.

– The technology is improving constantly, and a lot of money is being poured into P2PTV.

Disadvantages:

– There is one great disadvantage to P2PTV, and that is that it does use similar protocols as BitTorrent. With that in mind, if your ISP shapes torrent traffic in any way at all, or it is blocked by a school or college network, then you may no be able to use P2PTV.

2. Online streaming   TV   media .

Online streaming media has been around for years. You have most probably come across online media streaming in your travels across the Internet. The way streaming media works is similar to the way normal HTTP traffic works. It’s called Real Time Streaming Protocol or RTSP. As a type of traffic on the Internet it is virtually invisible to normal traffic. The way the video downloads is in sequence, and the packets are delivered sequentially in order to your computer. You can watch as it downloads, just as you can with P2PTV.

Advantages:

– Streaming media looks like normal Internet traffic, so if your ISP is shaping torrent traffic streaming media will still get through unhindered.

– Although it’s an old technology, it is being improved all the time.

Disadvantages:

– Because of the way streaming downloads, during peak times the picture can become jerky due to the speed of traffic.

The two main protocols for watching TV shows online both have their advantages and disadvantages. When choosing which way to go, take in to account your circumstances and how your ISP or college network operates, and you’ll be watching your favorite TV shows online without interference.

How to Set Up the Multi-Media TV

[ad_1]

This article will explain how to connect your PC to a Big Screen TV, and experience the ultimate in HD picture and HD sound, using the existing PC outputs. The set up is actually very simple, and will most likely only require an additional minimal purchase of an HDMI cable to connect the PC to the TV. The HDMI (High Definition Modular Interface) cable will carry both HD sound and picture to your TV.

Before you begin, you will need to verify that the Motherboard on your PC has an outlet to plug in a second display. Most of the newer motherboards contain both VGA and HDMI outputs on the same board. You will also need to verify that your TV has an HDMI input.

To complete the installation, first install (1) end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI output on the back of the PC. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI Input on the big screen TV. Then, configure your PC for using dual monitors. To configure your PC using the MS -Vista O.S., Click on the Vista Start Logo, Click on Control Panel. Click on Personalization, Click on Adjust screen resolution. You should now see the Display Settings window with the existing computer monitor (labeled 1), and a second smaller monitor (labeled 2).

Located immediately below the monitor icons, you will see the drop-down selector box with both monitors listed. By default the number (2) monitor will be the Big Screen TV. Immediately below the selector, check the (2) boxes, This is my main monitor, and extend the desktop on to this monitor. Click OK and Close the window.

Now for an example, resize your I.E. browser window, so it is about half the size of your computer screen. Grab the top of the browser window, and drag it over to the other monitor. After dragging the window, you should now see the I.E. browser window open on your other screen(TV). Now the fun part! Go to one the new free movie sites like Hulu, and now you can watch the show on your big screen TV courtesy of your PC.

Media Addiction Quiz for Teens: Do TV, Video Games and Computers Run Your Life?

[ad_1]

Welcome to “The Media Generation”

Teens are spending so much time watching TV and playing with their computer and video games that the Kaiser Family Foundation has dubbed this generation “The Media Generation.”

The recent study found that children aged 8-18 were watching TV, playing video games, on their computers, and listening to music for a total of 6 hours and 23 minutes EVERY DAY! Many kids were doing two or more activities at once. Most of this time is still spent watching TV. Kids spent almost four hours every day watching TV. Tips for Choosing a HD 1080p Media Player

[ad_1]

So how do you make sure you are getting the most value when purchasing a HD 1080p media player? Let’s look at the facts.

Media Compatibility

Broadcast TV, DVD movies, and streaming video are almost never 1080p. Having a HD 1080p is not going to enhance the picture any higher than one supporting only 1080i or 720p. The big difference comes when you start considering the latest formats of entertainment. Blu-Ray discs are support 1080p and can take the full advantage a HD which supports 1080p. This only becomes important if your are planning on archiving your Blu-Ray movies onto your HD 1080p, which can be a great choice.

What about your TV and your HD 1080p media player

The other factor you need to consider is your television. Having a HD 1080p player does you no good, if your big screen TV is only 720p. You could still buy the 1080p HD digital player with the plans of being ready when you upgrade your TV.

Video on Demand

Since 1080p is not supported by video on demand systems at this time, due to the large bandwidth it would require, it is not a major consideration when considering your HD streaming player today. This doesn’t mean it is not going to happen in the future. Should you plan for the future, or wait for change? If price was not your biggest concern, it would make sense to get a digital player which is ready for the next generation of streaming media. Microsoft, YouTube, and other services are already planning to offer 1080p.

Now lets look at the question is a HD 1080p player worth the price? The answer is an absolute YES. You will quickly discover the cost difference between a HD 1080p player and a less capable HD digital media player is only a few dollars. Why would you try to save only a few dollars, and then not be able to use it for your future upgrades? If you have any equipment capable of 1080p, your investment in a HD 1080p media player will be well rewarded.

Additional considerations when purchasing an HD 1080p media player

Compatibility with your entertainment system

The more important questions come down to choosing seamlessly integrates with your existing television and home theater system. Choose a HD 1080p which supports video on demand, is also an HD streaming media player, and has all the connection options you need for your equipment, especially an HDMI video connector.

Wired or wireless

A bigger question should be do I choose a wireless media player, or a wired system. This can even become more important with a HD 1080p since you’ll be pushing more data.

Storage of the HD 1080p.

Also, considering your storage options will be critical when buying a HD 1080p player. Storing your Blu-Ray movies onto your HD is going to use large amounts of space. You may want to consider using network attached storage for the ease of expansion and flexibility.

So is a HD 1080p media player the best choice in a HD digital player? To get the highest value from your dollar, and to be ready for all your future needs, no other choice really makes sense.

Make An International Conference Call

[ad_1]

A lot of technological advancements in communication and broadcasting have paved the way for bringing people from across the globe closer through an international conference call. However, people have been calling internationally without so much the thought of doing it the right way to save costs. If not, their telephone bill could amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars every month.

On the bright side, thanks to technology and modern times, there are a lot of international calling methods that are existent nowadays than there did many years ago. The humble telephone is not anymore the only means to call someone half a world away, but there is now a new method that relies on new technology like VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP makes phone calls over the Internet possible instead of traditional long distance calls.

To effectively communicate with other people across the globe without making a hole in your wallet is fairly easy. Just like making a regular conference call, an international conference call follows the same basic principles:

(1) participants dial in to a conference call access number, (2) they enter the access code or PIN for their conference, and (3) they join the conference.

International conference calling is unique in a way that international participants need special access numbers to avoid paying expensive international call rates. If you go to the larger services providers you might get an international toll-free number to access the conference. Other providers set up local access numbers in countries where their customers normally call.

For instance, you want to hold a conference call with clients in England, Japan, and Canada and you’re located in the United States. All you need to do is dial either an international toll-free access number or a local access number. Those who use the local access number are right away connected to the central conference bridge via a global IP network.

Using a dial-out system rather than a dial-in system is another economical way of making these kinds of calls. In a dial-out system the moderator dials out to each participant individually, thus absorbing the costs of each international call.

Digital Media Players

[ad_1]

In this growing world, technology is growing at a super speed and the media player is becoming the most important alternative of using information and storing with CD players and computers. You will find that these players must be available in every household item.
